    Pros:
    • Barrel
    • Trigger life
    • Grip adjustability
    • Weight

    Cons:
    • Rear sight adjustment
    • Limited grip rotation
    • Trigger recharging

I am not an Olympic shooter or even a state champion. I am 68 and have severe right shoulder arthritis from a bicycle crash. The age and arthritis mean I prefer a lighter pistol. This pistol is lighter because of the synthetic grip material, a thin barrel, and a carbon-aluminum air cylinder. However, it is not as light as my Steyr LP2 compact.

Aesthetically, I don’t care for the 'in your face' raised 'Walther' and 'LP500' on each side of the barrel shroud. They should have LEDs that flash when you shoot a 10X or maybe morph the appearance into a FWB if you shoot an 8 – that I would understand. I think the epitome of style is the Steyr LP2 compact. I think understating the name might be better than the billboard signs they have fastened to the sides of this thing. Let the results be the advertisement.

What I really do like is the barrel. I have a bore scope and I can see what you can’t – the inside of the barrel. I had recently bore scoped my Feinwerkbau P34 and noticed pits along the line of the top vent holes and in the opposite grooves – so after 30+ years of shooting, air rifle barrels evidently wear out too. But the Walther barrel is the most gorgeous barrel that I have ever seen. Evidently these 'gold' barrels have been lapped and polished. The interior surface is perfectly smooth and lustrous, like glistening liquid mercury, or a hot drop of solder – absolutely flawless. I don’t know if they cryo freeze these barrels, but I had this one treated in hopes of helping to preserve the flawless beauty.

Aside (feel free to skip this and the next paragraphs):
Based on my own limited experience with my 9015 field target barrel, I think cryo treatment helps. Unlike other field target air rifle barrels, and I have had about 9 different field target rifles, the cryo-treated 9015 barrel does not lead-up and will not throw flyers. I can get it completely like-new clean with a couple of felt pellets shot down the barrel. I look down it with the borescope, and it is still as good as the day I bought it. A barrel that is not lapped, polished and cryo treated will eventually throw flyers, usually after 1000 shots. Sometimes less, sometimes more. The flyers will become more frequent with time, unless you scrub all the lead out of that barrel – no easy task.

The place I have do the cryo treatment is Diversified Cryogenics in Burnsville Minnesota. These are a group of race car nuts that mostly do cryo treatment of engine parts on race cars. But they do gun barrels and a few other things. They are good guys that do good work. You can check out their website if you want more details

The electronic trigger, another reason I purchased this gun. I wore out the trigger on my Feinwerkbau P34, so I wanted something that would never wear out. Triggers wear out? I didn’t think so either, but evidently they do. I picked up my FWB after not shooting it for about a year and after shooting my latest air rifle (Anschutz 9015) a lot and noticed how rough and 'creaky' it seemed. I tried to adjust it, but could not get this roughness out and could not get the trigger 2nd stage weight close to 500 grams. So barrels and mechanical triggers wear out.

I have never had an electronic trigger, but you can do the same adjustments as a mechanical one. This one is annoying. My trigger, according to my Lyman electronic trigger gauge, has a pull weight of 358 gms. According to the manual (pretty good, by the way) turning screw C clockwise should increase this 2nd stage weight. I have turned it several complete turns now and the pull weight hasn’t changed. I don’t know if there is some linkage between 2nd stage travel and trigger weight or if one must make radical (multiple) turns of the screws to effect a change.

The trigger pull feels harsh to me. Now, that is a very subjective thing and my experience with this pistol is limited.. My current 'gold standard' for triggers is the 9015 trigger. I thought the ball bearings they make a lot of hype about were a gimmick – evidently not. That trigger is smooth. It is directly wired to my brain and I can think the shot. Well, I need to most of the time with my wobbly position. But that trigger is smooth and this one seems harsh. I even like the LP2 trigger better. But if the Walther lasts 100,000 rounds as claimed – I can live with it. And I might figure out how to tweak this one better. I would like to get their mechanical trigger and try that – evidently they can be swapped and they make a big deal about it in the manual. However, try to get just the mechanical trigger so you can have both – hard to do.

I want an immortal gun, a lifetime companion but is that possible? Cryotreating the barrel will extend its life considerably as will the smooth, low-friction surface, but what do I do about the trigger. The electronics will last 100,000+ rounds, but how long will the battery? Can you replace the battery or the electronic trigger in 10 years, will they still have the part – probably not. So I want the mechanical trigger too and maybe an extra regulator and cylinder. Is that too much hassle and expense? Maybe.

The most annoying thing about the electronic trigger is having to take off the grip to recharge the battery. This is a problem because the grip can be pivoted on several different axes and it is hard to recreate the tilt and rotation that you might prefer. Certainly they could make a charger port that is accessible from the trigger guard area – annoying indeed. Once I find a grip angle that I like I plan to cut a port that will allow me to plug in the USB mini cable without removing the grip. You would think Walther with their incredible German engineers would have thought of something better than this!

I also think the barrel bore is too high. The gun sits too high in my hand. This is partly because the grip cannot really be rotated to give the wrist down position that many of us shooters prefer. If you rotate the grip and then start tightening the screw to secure it – the grip rotates back so you are shooting a Model 1911 Colt 45 grip again – really disappointing. Maybe I should send this back and wait for the next model – thinking to myself.

I do like how the 5D grip can be adjusted, making an almost custom fit. 5D is that like 5 dimensions, including the ability to control time? It will remember my most favourite and best shooting grip fit? Maybe 3D would be a better description.

Another really annoying thing is the rear sight. Ughh. You can change the notch width in addition to the elevation, windage and cant adjustments. The problem is that when you change the notch width it moves the windage. It is unbelievably annoying. You have to move them both together and in large amounts to change the impact significantly. I must have spent over an hour to get the thing zeroed with a notch width that I like. I am afraid to even touch the thing now, because it is so hard to change.

You can also cant the rear sight. I am not sure why someone really wants to cant their pistol unless they want to shoot gangster style.

Well bottom line – 3 out of 5 stars, but I am keeping it – just love the care someone put into that barrel – somebody at Walther really cares about quality.
