The Gamo premises are situated in Barcelona, the capital of Catalunya and the industrial heart of Spain. The air rifles and air pistols of Gamo are sold worldwide and in addition to that, they are one of the biggest suppliers of airgun pellets. Gamo also offers other air rifle associated products, such as rifle scopes and targets.
Gamo started at the end of the nineteenth century as a manufacturer of lead ammunition under the name Antonio Casas S.A. Halfway through the last century, the company specialised in airgun pellets and eventually expanded under the name Industrias El Gamo. It was then, that Gamo started to design and produce airguns. They first did that purely for the Spanish market, but soon started exporting their airguns by popular demand and this is what has made Gamo to the immense company it is now.
When exporting their airguns, Gamo caters for the different markets by making sure all airguns comply to the maximum power levels demanded by law. For example, Gamo ships unrestricted airguns to The Netherlands, while the ones for the German market are restricted to 7.5 joules and airguns going to Hongkong are shipped with their power restricted to a meagre 2 joules. Being able to do this for all their airgun designs, is a big part of Gamo’s success.
Every airgun leaving the Gamo premises is completely built in-house. Gamo starts with raw materials. The steel is machined with CNC milling machines and welded with automatic automotive welding equipment, making for tight tolerances and a high level of uniformity. Even the wooden stocks (European walnut and beech) are automatically machined and synthetic parts are moulded locally. The whole process is automated as much as possible following the Industry 4.0 principle, where all technology is working autonomically and in sync, making it possible for automatic adjustments to be made during the manufacturing process, ensuring the highest possible level of uniformity.
When a new airgun is designed, it will be dry-fired at least a 100.000 times to test the quality. Airguns that are being produced are sampled by taking two out of every thousand airguns off the production line and let them endure a torture test of 10.000 dry-firing cycles. Gamo is definitely serious about quality.
For sure! Gamo is, for instance, one of the few airgun manufacturers that offers break barrel air rifles with a ten-shot magazine. They’ve got their own trigger designs and even have developed a recoil eliminating scope rail. Let’s have a look at a few of Gamo’s most interesting innovations:
In the Eighties, Gamo has started cooperating with other airgun manufacturers in Great-Britain, Germany, Brazil and the United States. This has resulted in the British BSA Airguns being taking over by Gamo and their production facilities in the UK are where -for example- Gamo’s highly regarded PCP barrels are made. In the United States, Gamo started Gamo USA and recently took over the American Daisy brand. Winchester Airguns is also owned by Gamo, just like BSA Optics.
