What's the advantage of a rifle case?

Compared with a soft rifle bag, a hard rifle case offers a better and more effective protection against bumps and scrapes during the transport of your rifle. The hard shell will protect against sharp objects and will spread the force of an impact. This will soften the impact for the rifle significantly to a level where no harm is done. A hard rifle case definitely offers the best protection when transporting your rifle.

What’s more, is that a hard rifle case also protects against unwanted hands. As long as you keep yourself from putting on tell-all stickers, it’s just a neutral case that could contain anything. And many times, a hard rifle case can be locked too. Some feature special holes for a padlock, but many have their own built-in locks. Often a number lock, though some do have key locks.

As mentioned, a hard rifle case offers the best possible protection for your rifle during transport. For this reason, a case like this is a must when traveling by air. Luggage gets to endure quite a lot during air travels. It’s thrown about and can end up under loads of other luggage.

Are there different types of hard rifle cases?

Yes, there are. We differentiate them into two categories: universal hard rifle cases and type specific ones. The latter consists mostly of cases for shotguns, where stock and barrel have their own compartment and often there’s a compartment for the chokes too. The compartments mostly feature thin foam padding with a soft fabric finish.

However, most of the hard rifle cases are the universal type without compartments. The advantage of this is, that they can be used for different rifles. There are even hard cases that can hold multiple rifles. Universal cases have thick and soft, shock-absorbing foam padding in both base and lid. Mostly this will be egg-crate foam. You can lay your rifle on the egg-crate foam in any position you like and the nubs will softly clamp the rifle in place when the lid is closed. The surrounding nubs will enclose the rifle, preventing it from shifting. It doesn’t matter if the rifle is scoped or not.

What size of rifle case do I need?

You definitely don’t want your hard rifle case to be on the small side. A centimetre left on both ends really is not enough. The protective foam relies on its springy action for dampening any impact and the more foam you have, the more it will dampen. A small tip when measuring your rifle and deciding what size case to go for: keep in mind that you’re going to place the rifle laterally into the case. Many of us make the mistake of thinking that placing the rifle diagonally, will allow for a smaller hard rifle case. The thing is, that you’ll discover that the bottom of the stock will then stick out.

And don’t focus on the length of the rifle alone either, as many of you will want to put a scoped rifle into the hard rifle case. So, take both length and height into account. Especially if you want to drop in a few other bits and bobs. Our advice is to choose one on the spacious side. You don’t have to overdo it, but you do want to have a good buffer around the rifle. Especially the end of the barrel and the shoulder piece should have enough foam next to them, as these sides are likely to receive the most impact during transport. It’s important to realise that, as everybody automatically focusses on impact on the sides if the rifle, coming from the flat base and lid of the case. However, it’s mostly pressure that these sides get to endure, the impact often comes from the corners.

The most common sizes are:

  • 100 cm hard rifle case - Not all rifles will fit. But if it’s all you need, this option makes for a nice and compact model that’ll surely fit in the boot of your car.
  • 120 cm hard rifle case – A perfect ‘in-between’ model for small and medium sized rifles that still is quite compact to transport.
  • 130 cm hard rifle case – This case is even more universally usable for rifles of different lengths, but the external dimensions are getting quite big.
  • 140 cm hard rifle case – This one is definitely substantial in size, but it will also allow you to take nearly any rifle with you.

Is a hard rifle case waterproof?

A hard rifle case usually is water resistant. You can take it out into the rain for a short while and you’ll be grand. Don’t leave it standing outside though. There are also hard rifle cases that are fully waterproof. You can recognise these cases easily, as they’ll have a rubber seal around the closing edge. Only with a rubber seal like that, a hard rifle case can be completely waterproof.
