Mora, the cradle of Swedish quality knives

Mora, a small town in Sweden, has been renowned for the production of quality knives for hundreds of years – a craft passed down from generation to generation. It’s no surprise that one of the most prominent manufacturers of outdoor knives originates from this region. Morakniv has a rich history dating back to 1891. This Swedish company now has nearly a century and a half of experience in producing knives of the highest quality.

How did Morakniv begin?

As mentioned, the year 1891 marks the beginning of the company we know now as Morakniv. That year, Frost-Erik Ersson –a lumberjack who had just returned to Mora from America– founded a factory primarily producing sleds and carts. Knives were also made, initially for use within the factory.

Soon, there appeared to be greater interest in the knives, as they began being produced for sale and export as early as 1898. It didn’t take long for these knives to gain immense popularity both in Sweden and abroad, thanks to their quality and exceptional sharpness.

The growing fame of the knives led Ersson to decide in 1904 to focus entirely on the production of knives. That year, the factory was renamed Frost’s Knivfabrik AB. Thanks to new techniques for the time and the use of modern machinery, he succeeded in producing high-quality, standardised knives on a large scale. This enabled the company to grow even further, in the context of a strong knife-making scene in Mora.

Knife development grew stronger in the years that followed. More and more types of knives were added to the production line, allowing the company to continue expanding. Frost’s Swedish knives gained a solid global reputation in the early 20th century. They were produced in large quantities and exported to many countries worldwide, from Columbia to Japan.

Mora of Sweden, a label of top quality

In 1988, the knife company of Erik Frost, which had already seen several different owners, merged with another knife manufacturer from Mora. The merger was completed in 2005, and the company was renamed ‘Mora of Sweden’. Since 2016, the company has continued under the name Morakniv AB.

Today, every Morakniv knife is still produced in Mora. The entire production process –from selecting and processing the steel to pressing the blade– takes place there. This gives Morakniv complete control over the production process, with a strong emphasis on quality and craftsmanship. Knives like the Morakniv Companion and Morakniv Garberg are perfect examples of the high quality and timeless design that have earned Morakniv its strong reputation.
