What is an airsoft mask?

An airsoft mask is a lightweight mask to cover the lower half of your face. It’s usually made from wire mesh or a combination of mesh and fabric. Especially around the mouth, the airsoft mask has lots of room. It doesn’t press against your face, giving you a maximum of comfort and freedom. Of course, the edges of an airsoft facemask are soft for a comfortable fit.
There are many different ways to wear an airsoft mask. Most of these facemasks are held in place with comfortable elastic bands around your head, but some of them are specifically designed to be mounted onto an airsoft helmet and we’ve also got airsoft masks that are held in place with a scarf or balaclava.

Do I need to wear an airsoft mask?

Often, only safety glasses or goggles are mandatory when participating in airsoft. Yet, many airsofters will wear an airsoft mask, as it doesn’t need to be mandatory to use your common sense. It’s easy for a tooth to get damaged by the impact of an incoming BB and the soft skin of your face is quite fragile and sensitive. An airsoft mask will prevent any damage or hurt to your mouth and chin, to your cheeks and jaw and often your nose is protected too.

Is an airsoft mask comfortable?

As an airsoft mask doesn’t weigh much and the edges are covered in soft material. A facemask like this isn’t intrusive and rests comfortable around your face. To keep an optimised airflow and prevent fogging up of your airsoft glasses, most often the whole airsoft mask is made from wire mesh. Some airsoft facemasks have fabric sides for a close fit around your face, but even the full mesh ones can be bent subtly for a perfect fit.

Cleaning an airsoft mask

As an airsoft mask is something you’re continuously breathing through, it’s a good idea to clean it every now and then in lukewarm water with a mild detergent. And not only for hygienic reasons; dirt, sand and grease can clog up the mesh. This can reduce the airflow, especially when condensation from breathing clings to the mesh, further narrowing the holes. This can result in fogging up of your airsoft glasses.
