Where does Bug-a-salt come from?
Bug-a-salt is an American brand. Founder is Lorenzo Maggiore, a surfer from California with a love-hate relationship with flies. He hates them, but must have developed some sort of love after the business success they have brought him.
As a child, he shot flies with rubber bands, which developed into the salt gun of which millions have sold worldwide: the Bug-a-salt. There was already a prototype in 1994, but things really took off when an octroi enabled mass production in 2012.
Bug-a-salt salt shotguns
The salt rifles of Bug-a-salt may seem a gimmick, but they are surprisingly effective in deterring flies, mosquitos, wasps and other nasty insects. And the great thing is, that you don’t necessarily have to wait for the bug to sit down, it can be taken down mid-flight too.
Bug-a-salt salt rifles are designed to work like a pump-action shotgun, which means sliding back the fore end. By doing that, a small portion of salt is loaded (less than 0,5 gramme). Pulling the trigger, will let the salt fly out like shot. This will have the salt spreading out a bit in a small cloud, making hitting the fly quite easy. And when hit, they won’t splatter, but stay intact. That’s a big advantage over a fly squatter. Besides, the Bug-a-salt is safe to use near food, as the ammunition is just table salt.
How accurate is a Bug-a-salt?
A Bug-a-salt has the advantage that you don’t need to get close to the fly or mosquito. At 3 feet (a metre) it’s deadly accurate, but with a bit of practice, you can easily enlarge the distance, as it’s easy to practice with the Bug-a-salt. And when you master greater distances, the Bug-a-salt will prove to be perfect for getting rid of mosquitos straight from your bed.
Target practice with a Bug-a-salt
By hanging a piece of aluminium foil (tin foil), you can easily see the shot pattern of your Bug-a-salt. It’s advisable to place/or wrap the foil on a solid background, to prevent it from ripping. First, start at a metre, align the sights, aim and see where the imprint is made. Now you can enhance the distance, while noticing that the imprint (spread) will become bigger and hits the target lower.
Bug-a-salt maintenance
To keep the pump-action of your Bug-a-salt sliding smoothly, you could consider using Vaseline or WD40 penetrating oil. Both are recommended by the manufacturer. We’d like to add that you use just enough for a smooth action to return. Using too much will result in residue that will attract dirt and grime.
