These Vortex Talon HD 10K K10x42 ballistic laser rangefinding binoculars are ideal for hunting and long-range shooting. With the built-in laser rangefinder and ballistic calculator, it can help with determining ranges and adjustments for a rifle scope.

The Vortex Talon HD 10K 10x42 is of course a pair of binoculars in the first place. The optical quality of the lenses is considerable: the image is clear and the colours are accurate. There is also very little distortion of the image around the edges of the lenses, ensuring a sharp image. With separate focus rings for dioptre- and display focus adjustment, the binoculars can be adjusted to the individual user. These rings can be locked after the initial adjustment, ensuring that they cannot be accidentally adjusted. A larger focus wheel in the middle then functions as the focus for both eyes simultaneously.

Range modes

The laser rangefinder has a number of different modes with which ranges can be measured. Its maximum ranging distance in ideal weather conditions varies from around 9,100 metres on reflective surfaces to approximately 2,200 metres on poorly reflective surfaces, such as deer hide.

• HCD mode: Horizontal Component Distance, which is the horizontal distance to the target.
• LOS mode: Line of Sight, simply provides the exact distance from the rangefinder to the target. Also provides the relative angle to the target.
• BAL mode: Ballistics mode, which utilises the ballistic calculator. It provides the required adjustments for the rifle scope in MIL, MOA, or inches, together with the measured angle and distance to the target.

Target modes

There are also several target modes, in order to provide the most accurate range possible.

• Normal: distance to the object with the best reflection.
• ELR: Extended Laser Range, for use at longer ranges. Does cost more time.
• First: provides the range to the closest measured object.
• Last: provides the range to the furthest measured object.
• Rain/Fog: provides better measurements in poor weather. Does not work at long ranges.

Ballistic Calculator

Adjustments for the rifle scope can be calculated precisely with the built-in ballistic calculator of the Vortex Talon HD 10K 10x42 ballistic laser rangefinding binoculars. To do so, the calculator makes use of ballistic profiles per calibre, which can be manually set or adjusted. When calculating the correction, properties of the projectile and rifle are incorporated, together with the relative angle to the target, wind and other weather conditions.

Wind direction and -speed need to be entered manually, or using the GeoBallistics app with a connected device. The wind direction is saved and accurately calculated using the on-board compass. Ballistic calculator settings can also be adjusted using the app. Ten range cards with each a maximum of ten ranges can be saved, for predetermined shooting distances.
