ThermTec Oryx-L 650 Thermal Imaging Rifle Scope

The ThermTec Oryx-L 650 thermal imaging rifle scope offers an extremely detailed image with a high resolution. It has a detection range of up to 2,600 metres. There are numerous imaging options and crosshairs, along with several recording options. A laser rangefinder and a ballistic calculator are also integrated.

Imaging

The sensitivity of the Oryx-L 650 is notable. The sensitive sensor and the high-resolution screen provide an extremely detailed and refined image, which displays the slightest variations in temperature. The sensitivity also offers advantages during daylight, because the smallest temperature differences between animals and their environment can be observed. As a result, this thermal imaging rifle scope exposes what remains hidden in dense foliage to the naked eye, even in broad daylight.

A thermal imaging rifle scope offers so much more than just night vision. It also provides an advantage under a dark forest canopy or in twilight. Even spotting and observing game during daytime can become easier by using the tracking mode, for instance.

There are six colour modes, where the main colour displays heat:

• Black
• Red
• Green
• Amber
• Purple

Of course, the image quality can be further adjusted to personal preferences using the following settings:

• Sharpness, brightness and contrast
• Noise suppression
• Image stabilisation

There are several image modes and options:

• Standard
• Forest (higher detail and contrast)
• Rain (focus on specific heat sources, less on background)
• Outline (silhouettes)
• Tracking (marks the warmest object)

The image has a standard magnification of 3.7x and the digital zoom can magnify up to four times. Surprisingly, this is done with an ergonomic adjustment ring instead of push buttons. It is even possible to set whether the zooming in and -out happens very rapidly or more gently and with a steady image.

Follow-up function

An interesting feature of the ThermTec Oryx-L 650 thermal imaging rifle scope is that it possesses a TASS (ThermTec Autosight System) function, which automatically zooms the image back out to the standard magnification after a shot is fired. This ensures that a full field-of-view is immediately shown without requiring additional actions, allowing for a quick follow-up shot if necessary.

Recording

In addition to displaying thermal imaging, the ThermTec Oryx-L 650 thermal imaging rifle scope also offers the following recording options:

• Photo
• Video
• RAV (Recoil Activated Video), automatic recording after firing
• Picture in picture

The RAV mode starts recording immediately after a shot is fired. It captures several seconds before the shot, as well as several seconds after. This makes this mode very useful to analyse a shot.

Reticle

There are eight reticles in five colours:

• Black
• White
• Red
• Green
• Blue

The colour of the dot can be adjusted independently and the brightness of the reticles can be adjusted in three levels.

Additionally, there is an option to change the location of the reticle to the first or second focal plane. With the first option, the reticle is magnified along with the image when zooming in, whereas with the second option the reticle remains the same size.

Zeroing, adjusting the reticle to match the point of impact, can be done both manually and automatically. Up to six separate zeroing profiles can be saved on the internal memory, allowing for rapid adjustment between the different pre-set zeroing ranges.

Rangefinder and ballistic calculator

Another advantage of the Oryx-L 650 is that it contains an extremely compact built-in laser rangefinder with a range of up to 1,200 metres. The ballistic calculator uses these measurements in order to mark a predicted point of impact on the reticle. This is determined based on parameters which can be set manually, such as winds peed, bullet weight, bullet velocity, height-over-bore and other factors.
