Why use airsoft goggles?
There are three reasons why you should use airsoft goggles and glasses. The first two -logically- focus on eye protection. The third one is the fact that airsoft goggles and airsoft glasses can offer you quite a visual advantage.
Reason 1: incoming BB’s
In airsoft, you fire BB’s at each other. These small balls reach impressive speeds, resulting in quite a noticeable impact when you’re hit. On your body and limbs, you can definitely feel them, but they won’t wound you. This doesn’t go for the eyes though, as the soft eye tissue can easily be damaged by a direct hit. You can imagine what that can result in, depending how lucky or unlucky you are. With airsoft goggles or airsoft glasses, you’re protecting your eyes against a direct impact. It’s a simple and cheap protection for which there’s absolutely no good argument not to use it.
Reason 2: branches, sand and dirt
Airsofting can be quite active with lots of running around, sliding and hiding. Dirt will be kicked up and branches can hit your face. Of course, you take care, but how about the other players? By wearing airsoft goggles or airsoft glasses, you’re protecting your eyes.
Reason 3: tactical advantage
Airsoft goggles and airsoft glasses can be bought with lots of different coloured lenses. The colour doesn’t matter when it comes to UV protection, so if you prefer clear lenses just for protection against objects, that’s fine. A coloured lens, however, can offer some interesting tactical advantages. We’ll explain:
- Grey lenses, also known as smoke or black, depending on the hue, lessens glare. They’re also perfect for filtering bright light.
Amber or brown lenses are perfect with light clouds. Airsoft goggles and airsoft glasses with these lenses give more depth to your vision and enhance the contrast between the blue sky and green vegetation. - Yellow and orange will give a better contrast, while also providing you with more depth in your vision when used in low light conditions like inside or cloudy conditions. Your surroundings appear brighter, almost sunny.
- Blue and purple lenses enhance contrast and are particularly effective when it’s foggy. They reduce glare too.
- Red and pink give more depth to your vision, making for clearer details. They also reduce eye strain.
- Green lenses reduce glare and prevent eye strain in bright light conditions.
Which airsoft goggles are the best?
First, you have to distinguish airsoft glasses from airsoft goggles. Airsoft glasses offer a frontal protection in their most basic shape. However, we do have some that follow the shape of the head, making for a tighter fit and more side protection. There are even airsoft glasses with side shields to offer protection from BB’s and branches from the sides.
If you go for maximum protection, it’s airsoft goggles that you want. You can compare them to diving goggles or dust goggles. They will completely protect your eyes from all sides, having a layer of foam that fits snugly around your eyes. However, if you’re quite sweaty and warm, airsoft goggles might sometimes steam up when you’re standing still. Top models do feature good ventilation and there are products available to prevent fogging up, like sprays and even external air supplies.
Another thing to consider is your choice of airsoft goggles or airsoft glasses when you’re wearing a helmet. Airsoft glasses need to have legs that can easily slide under the helmet and won’t be pressing in the sides of your head. When you opt for airsoft goggles, you need to determine if you can wear the elastic band under or over your helmet. Most of the time, they are worn over the helmet, but not all helmets will allow this.
