The advantage of a PCP air tank
To fill the PCP air bottle on your air rifle, you’ve got three options. The first one is to use a hand pump, which can be tiring when used a lot and can be time consuming too. Another possibility is to use a compressor, but these aren’t really mobile and you’ll need a mains connection too.
The best option for a quick refill of your PCP air rifle, is to use a PCP air tank. It holds a large amount of compressed air, that’ll let you refill your PCP multiple times. Depending on the chosen air rifle, you can get from about 40 up to far over a hundred refills. Excesses like 1000 Joule PCP’s will get, of course, less refills. A PCP air tank -or PCP charging bottle, as these PCP refill tanks are also called- is relatively compact and mobile. With that, it fills the need to take it to the shooting range or have a supply of compressed air available at home.
What types of PCP air tanks are there?
We’ve got three types of PCP air tank for sale: industrial static tanks, PCP scuba tanks and carbon tanks. The industrial PCP refill tank is meant for static use, while the PCP scuba tank is lighter, making it more mobile. Extremely light is the carbon PCP fill tank that we sell. It features a thin aluminium line with a strong carbon outer.
When you’re buying a PCP air tank from us, it will always be a 300 bar one, regardless of the type or its capacity. Below, we’ve got a convenient overview of the different sizes for you:

We do have some odd sizes in between, but with those mentioned above, you’ll get a pretty good idea of what to expect. This should enable you to make a well-considered decision when buying a PCP refill tank from us.
Does a PCP air tank need to be inspected?
If you’re not from the Netherlands, please check your local legislation. As for those of you residing in the Netherlands: yes, PCP air tanks need to be inspected. As the pressure inside is quite significant, inspection is a must. A damaged PCP air rifle refill tank can cause lots of damage when it fractures with a bang.
Industrial static PCP fill tanks have to be checked once every ten years, while PCP scuba tanks need a check every five years. These steel bottles are checked for rust. Inside, this is done with an endoscope. If rusty, sandblasting can remove the rust and if the pitting isn’t too deep, the tank will pass. Often, a coating of zinc is applied to keep new rust at bay. When a PCP charging bottle gets damaged, it mostly happens on the outside, especially at the bottom. To prevent that, we’ve got cylinder boots for a stable and protective base. Our assortment also consists of soft rolls that’ll let you lie down the PCP air tank in a stable manner. Special carrying bags offer full protection against bumps and scrapes, while also making transport a breeze.
A 300 bar carbon air tank needs to be inspected every four years. This is because the inside is made from relatively soft aluminium, while the outside is from strong, but brittle carbon that can be quite sensitive to impact. When the carbon is damaged, the PCP refill tank will be written off as damage immediately results in a weak spot. Carbon consists of carbon fibres, bonded in raisin and it’s susceptible to ageing, hence a carbon PCP air tank has a lifespan of 15 years. However, the huge weight advantage compared to a steel one, makes the carbon PCP refill cylinder a very popular choice.
Charging a PCP air tank
A PCP air tank can be filled with a compressor, but having it filled at a charging point has some advantages. First thing is the fact that you save yourself the space of a compressor inside your house or shed. And the second thing is that we can fill the PCP air tank with completely dry and filtered air. All moist has been taken out, minimalizing the chance of rust inside the cylinder. And as the air is filtered, small parts of dust won’t be able to create leakage of components in both the PCP air tank as the PCP air rifle itself. Of course, for your safety as well as ours, we only fill PCP airgun tanks that have passed inspection.
How do you fill a PCP with a PCP air tank?
A PCP air rifle refill tank has a valve to open or close it and some even feature their own pressure gauge. If yours doesn’t have one, the valves with pressure gauges are for sale separately in our shop. The valve has a threaded DIN-connection (5/8”x14 BSP) to which the filling hose can be connected. For this, we’ve got multiple connectors available. On the other end of the filling hose, there’s a connector for in or on your PCP air rifle. For this, we’ve also got loads of connectors, adapters and quick release systems.
When the PCP is connected, you slowly open the valve on the PCP air tank and let the air flow into the PCP bottle or PCP cylinder. After closing the valve, you’ll see that the needle of the pressure gauge will drop a bit. This is because the pressure in the PCP air tank is (logically) greater than the pressure inside the PCP. The pressure inside the filling hose will thus also be greater than the pressure inside the PCP reservoir. When you close the valve, this greater pressure will drop, with the pressure gauge displaying the actual pressure inside the PCP. By opening the valve a little and closing it swiftly, you can finetune the last bit of air coming in, filling your PCP right up to the max.
If you like ease of use -and let’s be honest, who doesn’t- you can put a regulator with its own pressure gauge in between. Once you’ve set the regulator on the right pressure, the only thing you need to do is open the PCP air tank valve and wait for the PCP to be filled completely. Then it’s just a case of shutting the valve again and you’re done.
Disconnecting the PCP after closing the valve isn’t just a case of removing the connector from your PCP. You can screw out the connector or disconnect the quick release connection, but the pressure inside the filling hose will be as high as the pressure inside your PCP, so you’ll end up with a powerful and noisy blast of air escaping. It’s better to use the bleeding screw on the PCP fill tank, if yours has one. Slowly open the screw and gently let the pressure inside the hose escape. After that, you can quietly disconnect the filling hose without drama.
Buying a PCP air tank
When buying a PCP refill tank, there are some things to take into account. The first thing to think about is if you want the tank to be static or mobile. The advantage of static PCP air tanks is that the inspection intervals are twice as long as for mobile tanks, for which they aren’t designed. They’re quite heavy and robust. If you want a PCP airgun tank to be mobile, you’re best of with a PCP scuba tank, which is considerably lighter and is designed for mobile use. And if weight really is important, the carbon PCP air tank is your best option, weighing just a fraction of a PCP scuba tank.
When you’ve chosen the type of tank, it’s time to consider the capacity. A large 20 litres PCP air tank is ideal for refilling your PCP at home, while a 5, 7 or 10 litres tank is more compact, lighter and mobile. Choosing between these, is a matter of knowing how much air your PCP is using per shot. Very powerful PCP’s will use their air more quickly then lower powered ones and also take into account how many shots you’re planning to take.
