Kershaw is an American brand of quality knives. The knives that are produced are fit for daily use (EDC’s or Every Day Carry), but they also offer tactical knives and knives for outdoor use, hunting and fishing. While Kershaw certainly has a very nice portfolio of fixed blade knives, they are very big in folding knives. Kershaw designs its own knives, but also employs the services of well-known custom knife makers to make designs for them. With great designs and outstanding quality, Kershaw still manages to keep their prices affordable and that’s what makes this brand immensely popular worldwide.
Kershaw prides itself for producing knives of high quality that should last a lifetime. For this, high-end materials are used for blade and handle. These materials are precision machined in high-tech facilities and assembled with craftmanship. Besides usability and durability, Kershaw has a sharp focus on design, as the philosophy is that a product that will last you a lifetime, should be pleasing for the eye too.
One of the things Kershaw is known for, is for being quite innovative. They’re always on the lookout for new solutions, systems and materials. Whether it’s Micarta or G10 for the handle or extreme durable CPM 20CV steel for the blade, there’s always something new to be implemented into the design of new knives. For instance, Kershaw uses multiple blade-locking systems and some blades swivel on bearings for ultimate smoothness. There are many systems to open their knives too.
If you have to name the innovation that has had the most impact for Kershaw, it’s the SpeedSafe assisted opening system that knife maker Ken Onion designed for them. With this system, you’ll push the blade open with your thumb on a flipper. First you have to push against a spring preload that keeps the blade safe inside the handle. But after the initial opening movement, the preload of the spring reverses and takes over from your thumb, swiftly flinging the blade out and swinging it firmly in the lock. It’s a great system to open a folding knife with one hand as it requires little effort and it helps you keep your focus on the job at hand.
Kershaw was established as a brand in 1974 by Pete Kershaw in Lake Oswego, Oregon USA. He had his own designs made by knife manufacturer Kai in the Japanese town of Seki, who employed knife maker Ichiro Hattori to do the job. The partnership between Kai and Kershaw was a lasting one, as within a few years, the Kai Group opened a US based facility -Kai USA Ltd.- in Wilsonville, Oregon, USA, with Pete Kershaw as part of the management. Nowadays, Kershaw is an integral part of the Kai Group.
As production expanded, Kai USA moved to new premises in Tualatin, Oregon. Kershaw’s high-end knives are still produced there. But to be able to meet demand and produce more than a million knives a year, Kershaw also has production facilities in Japan and China. Quality control of all Kershaw knives is still done in the USA premises before the knives are sent to their worldwide destinations.
