What is Glock?
Glock is an Austrian manufacturer of one of the most recognisable and successful handguns in the world. Ever since the production of the P80 (Glock 17), their first 9 mm pistol, ‘Glocks’ are known as highly reliable, user-friendly and accurate. After all these years since this revolutionary gun entered the market, Glock is still as popular as ever and loved by both experienced and less experienced shooters.
The origin of Glock
In 1963, a company named Glock KG was founded by Gaston Glock in Deutsch-Wagram, Austria. Initially this company aimed at the production of consumer goods, and from 1970 also products for the military, like knifes, are produced. These products were made from wood, metal and polymers. Till 1980 Gaston Glock had never designed a firearm.
This changed when in 1980 the Austrian Ministry of Defence needed a new pistol for the army. It had to be lightweight, extremely reliable and easy to operate. In short, a new future-proof service pistol was needed. Glock recognised this as a great opportunity and teamed up with engineers to create a new gun that combines all these requirements in the first-ever Glock, the P80. It concerned a semi-automatic pistol with 9 mm calibre. Maybe the most innovative feature of this new handgun was that it was mainly made from a very strong polymer, a synthetic material which Glock was already specialised in for years. It played a huge part in making the gun extremely lightweight.
In the meantime, Glock GmbH was founded and the weapon became a big success. Not only it was adopted as service pistol by the Austrian army, but other European countries, like Norway and Sweden, quickly followed. During the distribution of the new 9 mm Glock pistol, the gun underwent a name change. The P80 became known as the Glock 17, corresponding to the magazine capacity, although it could also refer to the 17th patent of Glock.
Glock in America
After the introduction of the Glock 17 in America in 1986 with law enforcement units, it also quickly rose to popularity in the commercial market. It wasn’t before long or the Glock pistol became infamous due to various myths that reached the public. A big reason for this was the movie Die Hard 2 from 1990. In this movie, Bruce Willis’ character spoke about a certain ‘Glock 7’, a porcelain gun from Germany which could be carried past airport customs undetected. Despite all of this was (and still is) untrue, and the ‘Glock 7’ has never existed at all, it turned out to be good publicity for Glock.
Next to multiple other Hollywood movies in which Glock made its appearance, the name ‘Glock’ also started to feature in rap lyrics during the ‘90s. Examples are 2Pac, Dr. Dre and Wu-Tang Clan, to name a few. Due to this extremely beneficial publicity, as well as the Glock 17’s top quality, Glock quickly became an established name with law enforcement as well as the civilian market. Today, more than 20 million Glock pistols have been sold worldwide, including new generations of the Glock 17 and other models like the Glock 19, Glock 19X and Glock 45.
